What do you need to make poached pears?

Such an easy list

  • pears – peeled but do not remove the stems
  • wine – we used Sauvignon Blanc because it is what we had but you could probably play around with different wines and get different flavor results
  • cinnamon sticks – technically you could use ground cinnamon as well, but it will color the pears brown quite a bit.
  • granulated sugar – brown sugar would be excellent as well

We really love this as an elegant ending to an elegant dinner. But honestly, they go well with many many different types of meals.

Servings 8 cinnamon poached pears

  • 8 whole pears
  • 3/4 bottle wine
  • 1.25 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 whole cinnamon sticks
  • water

  • Peel the pears, keeping the stems in place. If you want to slice the pears in half, do so now and remove any seeds.
  • Combine the wine, the granulated sugar and the cinnamon sticks in a large sauce pot.
  • Bring the mixture to a simmer for 5 minutes or so. Gently set the pears upright into the sauce pot.
  • Add enough water to cover the pears to at least the stems. Bring back to a simmer.
  • Once simmering, cover the pears with a a piece of parchment paper. I just cut a piece that fit the pot, poked some holes with a fork and shoved into the sauce pot. (it wasn't pretty but it did the trick!) Simmer for another 15 minutes.
  • Test your pear for doneness by using a fork or knife to pierce. You want them to be pretty soft but you don't want them to fall apart completely.
  • Gently remove from water. Serve. Add a caramel or chocolate sauce drizzle for even more deliciousness.
